My favourite bits of kit and why I like them

Approach Shoes

They are so comfortable. Light enough for me not to notice them. Robust enough to manage a bit of mud. Gore-Tex to cope with damp grass or a bit of rain. Subtle enough not to be obvious.

Long boots

Amazing for puddly (technical term) days. Great for mud and for the winter to keep my legs warm. Comfortable and urban enough not to scare people.

Waterproof jacket

A good fitting hood. Velcro wrists to keep out the cold and rain. An inside pocket for phone and keys. Zipped outside pockets to stop things falling out. Pit zips for ventilation if it gets too hot.

Berghaus Extrem Winter Trousers

Warm. Windproof. Keep me dry in light rain. Robust so they don’t get caught or torn on brambles. Dry mud brushes off them easily. Subtle side vents if it gets too hot.

Fleece Buff

Ideal for a warm neck in the winter. Compact and beijou v a scarf!

Gilet

I love being able to add an extra layer of warmth without adding bulk a gilet is perfect for this. It fits easily under all my jackets. Zip pockets are great for secure storage of small items. The full length zip allows for temperature adjustment between walking and sitting. High collar is great for keeping my neck warm in winter.

Ice Breaker thermals/tops

I have a few of these in different styles and levels of warmth. They are all made of merino wool and are great for keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They are well made and look professional enough if I end up indoors with a client for a coffee. Beware – moths love them!

Day05-Kit-BlenderBottle.jpg

Blender bottle

Big enough to hold lots of water. Hook for easy carrying. Attached lid so I don’t drop it. Wide neck so I’m not noisy.

Websites that are good for kit and have good discounts

Useful weather apps

I find the one on my iPhone good enough, but I have colleagues who like:

  • BBC Weather

  • Met Office

  • Accu Weather
